Gilberto, AKA Gil, was born on June 28, 1962, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Luis and Ana Hernandez. He was called to eternal rest on August 3, 2026.
He is survived by his loving sisters, Judith (Jorge) Vega, Luz Ascencio, and Bethzaida (Bob) Pierce; his brothers, Hector, Angel (Esther), and John (Martina) Hernandez; and his two sons, Gilberto L. and Andrew A. Hernandez.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Luis and Ana Hernandez, and his brothers, Julio, Wilfredo, Jose, and Anival.
Gilbert had a deep love for cooking and was a man of many talents, including carpentry, writing poems, and music. He enjoyed playing his congas to Christian Latin salsa and had a passion for watching sports, especially football and basketball. He was a proud fan of the Eagles and the 76ers.
Throughout the years, Gil resided at several Adult Teen Challenge locations, including Pennsylvania, Boston, Massachusetts, New Haven, Connecticut, and Vermont. He later lived in Lebanon, New Jersey, for over eight years. Gil was well versed in Scripture and enjoyed teaching and sharing his faith with the men at various Adult Teen Challenge locations. He loved what he did and deeply loved his brothers.
His life was a testament to the words found in Acts 20:35:
“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
Gil’s generosity of spirit, unwavering faith, and loving heart will live on in the memories of all those who knew and loved him.
We will miss you, Gil, but we will see you again.
