It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jeanette Marie Simmons, who departed this life on June 10, 2025. Born on November 21, 1952, in Camden, NJ, to the late Elgie and Christine Morton, Jeanette was a vibrant "five-foot-tall firecracker" known for her compassion, strength, sternness, outspoken nature, and wonderful sense of humor.
In 1968, Jeanette married Nathaniel B. Simmons, in Camden, New Jersey. Nathaniel preceded her in death.
Jeanette found joy in her spare time by playing cards, mastering Pac-Man on Nintendo 64, and watching her favorite movies and westerns. She also had a great love for shopping. Her professional life was marked by a deep commitment to serving others. She worked various jobs as a substitute teacher and in real estate before dedicating 20 years of her life as a social worker for the Department of Citizen Services in Camden and Newark, New Jersey. Her unwavering commitment ensured that the most vulnerable in society were seen and cared for.
Jeanette was also preceded in death by her beloved siblings, Delaphine Morton, Mattie Morton, Wayne Morton, Iris Morton, Pamela Morton, Dean Morton, and Anthony Morton.
A loving mother and a beacon of strength, Jeanette leaves to mourn her passing sister Mary and husband Jerome Fullard, and brother Elgie Morton Jr. and wife Veronica. She is also survived by her beloved children, Nathaniel Simmons, Precyous Simmons, and Jasmine Martinez, and her son-in-law Jose Martinez. Her heart held an immeasurable love for her children; they were her greatest achievement and source of joy. As the quote she cherished states, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." Jeanette found her "why" in her children and in her dedicated service to others.
She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Nakia Simmons, Jade Bundy, Najahla Simmons, Niyah Simmons, Naiem B. Simmons, Ashai Simmons, Ashonnie Simmons, Keymani Simmons, Kayla Simmons, Kaejah Simmons, Kadens Simmons, Jose Martinez Jr., Destiny Martinez, and her great-grandchildren, Peyton McNeil, Ava Ross, and Saint Simmons. Jeanette also leaves behind her best friend Valerie Jones, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who knew Jeanette, who were touched by her spirit, and who shared in her journey. As we remember Jeanette, let us honor her by living our lives as she did: unapologetically.
