Michele Lewis

–

Camden, New Jersey

Michele Ann Carter, lovingly known as “Shelly,” was born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, to the late Rether and Charles Carter. She was educated in the Camden City School District and proudly graduated from Camden High School, Class of 1970.

In 1973, Michele married Billy (BJ) Lewis. Their marriage lasted until 1991.

Shelly continued her education at SBC Business School in Audubon, New Jersey, where she gained knowledge in computer use and software navigation—skills she later applied throughout her career. She was employed at West Jersey Hospital and later with the Camden City School System, where she met her longtime companion, John “JB” Brown, who also preceded her in death.

A woman of deep faith and generous spirit, Michele was a devoted member of Fellowship of Faith Outreach Ministry. She found great joy in cooking, dancing, praising the Lord, and volunteering to feed the less fortunate. Shelly was known for her love of Bingo and her memorable road trips to Atlantic City with family, where she enjoyed the beach, slot machines, and snacks and beverages she lovingly prepared.

Shelly was an extraordinary cook, and her family and friends eagerly anticipated her holiday meals. She would spend countless hours preparing large, delicious spreads, bringing everyone together through food and love.

Michele Ann Lewis leaves to cherish her memory her beloved daughter, Cheere Lewis (Howard); granddaughters Michelle Lewis (Tyren) and Cidney Lewis (Jarret); grandson Andre Lewis; great-grandsons Quamere and Pablo; two loving nieces who were like daughters, Kesha and Jimmina (Gary); great-niece/granddaughter Charese (Samantha); great-nephew/grandson Syteek (Janis); and a host of great-grandchildren: Kas, Synaa, Nigeria, and Aloni. She is also survived by her best friends Dorothy Harris, Rhetta Moore, and Delores Burkett and granddaughter-in-love Lonnie.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the extended Brown family for loving and embracing Momma Shelly as their own.

Michele was preceded in death by her parents, Rether and Charles Carter; her longtime companion John “JB” Brown; her sister Garnett Farrington; and her brother Maurice Carter.

Shelly will be remembered for her loving heart, her faith, her unforgettable cooking, and the joy she brought to everyone she encountered. Her legacy of love lives on through all who knew and cherished her.
