Rene Xavier Nurse Jr. was born on Tuesday, March 9, 1965 in Hollywood, Maryland to Rene Thomas Nurse Sr. and the late Margaret Idola Nurse (Spears). On Tuesday August 25, 2026, Rene peacefully went home to be with the Lord at Atlanticare Medical Center after a lengthy illness, with his beloved wife by his side. He was a cherished resident of Galloway, New Jersey.
Rene was the second of four brothers. During his younger years, his family relocated to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he was educated in the Atlantic City Public School System. It was there that Rene began building the friendships, memories and relationships that would remain an important part of his life.
From an early age, Rene was a natural-born athlete. He had a passion and talent for both football and basketball. During his junior high school years, Rene became well known for his ability to dunk a basketball, earning the affectionate name "Chocolate Thunder" from his friends. His athletic ability and larger-than-life personality made him someone who was difficult to forget. Rene continued his education at the Atlantic City High School, where he received sports honors and proudly graduated with the Class of 1984.
Throughout his life, Rene treasured the friendships and family bonds he formed along the way. He shared a special bond with his cousin Noble Ali, as well as lifelong friendships with Eddie "Downtown" Brown, whom he had known since childhood and Terry Tillman, whom Rene lovingly called "Tyson". These relationships were more than friendships-they were bonds built on loyalty, laughter, love and countless memories.
Rene was a loving and generous man with a heart of gold. He cared deeply for his wife, family, friends and was always willing to give of himself to those he loved. He possessed a personality that was larger than life, yet beneath that big personality was a gentle soul who touched the lives of many.
He was affectionately known as "My 6'5" by his beloved wife, Rochelle. Their love and companionship were a beautiful part of Rene's life and they shared fourteen years of marriage together.
Rene was a hard worker who took pride in providing for his family throughout his career. He held several positions over the years, but most recently served in the Security Department at Pleasantville High School through the Pleasantville Board of Education. Rene was respected and admired by his co-workers and dedicated 17 years of service before retiring.
Outside of work, Rene enjoyed the things that brought him happiness. He was a die-hard football fan and faithfully followed his favorite team, the Oakland Raiders, especially during football season. He also enjoyed fishing, taking time to relax and enjoyed the outdoors.
Rene was also a member of the Christian Men's Followship, "Iron Sharpens Iron", in Atlantic City, New Jersey, which was facilitated by Deacon Larry Snow. His faith and fellowship were meaningful parts of his journey.
Rene's life was filled unforgettable memories. Although his physical presence is no longer with us, the laugher he shared, the kindness he showed and the love he gave will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Rene was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Margaret Idola Nurse (Spears). Those left to cherish his beautiful memory: His loving wife Rochelle Nurse (Marshall); his father, Rene Thomas Nurse Sr.; his brother, Joseph and his wife, Maggie of Winslow Township, New Jersey; his brother, Gregory Nurse of Maryland; his brother, Christopher Nurse, and his fiancee of Galloway, New Jersey; his aunts, Marilyn "Dutchess" Dunbar of Glassboro, New Jersey and Marie Spears of Virginia, along with his beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members, lifelong friends, co-workers and those who were blessed to know and love him.
